1. Eat enough protein every day

Hair is made almost entirely of protein. For this reason, it’s important to consume enough protein every day.

Protein is a nutrient essential for your body, and it cannot produce it itself. If you’re on a diet that is low in protein, your body will start “eating” protein from your hair, skin, and nails.

Here are the best sources of protein from food:

  • eggs
  • nuts and seeds
  • fish
  • lower fat dairy products (milk, yogurt)
  • beans, peas and lentils
  • Tofu, soybeans and soy products.

However, I personally always feel that I don’t consume enough protein per day. For this reason I additionally use protein powder, and make delicious protein shakes using vegan milk, protein powder, banana, nuts, dried fruits, etc.

2. Limit heat tools 

According to phys.org, researchers have found that heat changes keratin proteins that result in hair damage. Curling wands and flat irons could fry the keratin proteins that make up about 85% of our hair, turning it dry and brittle over time. [1]

Try to limit using heat tools as much as possible and always use heat protector to minimize the damage to your hair.

3. Brush your hair only twice per day

Overbrushing can irritate scalp and stress the hair, causing it to break and fall out. Try to minimize hair brushing to only twice per day – in the morning and before going to sleep.

4. Weekly deep oiling treatment

Deep hair oiling is an ancient Indian beauty practice used to strengthen hair and grow it longer. Just as our skin, our hair needs vitamins and minerals to stay nourished. And not only the strands but also the hair roots because healthy hair starts with a healthy scalp.

Hair oiling should be done before shower or even better – before bed at night. Simply section dry hair and apply some oil and massage it into the scalp. Put on a shower cap and a warm hat because heat allows the oils to work more effectively. For best results leave it overnight and wash in the morning.

There are many oils on the market made especially for deep hair oiling. I’m currently using Fable & Mane Fable and Mane HoliRoots Indian Hair Growth Oil and I noticed that my hair feels much softer and healthier after every treatment. I haven’t used it long enough though, but the reviews seem really good. I will see if it makes my hair thicker and longer.

5. Use silk scrunchies

Silk/satin hair ties have a very gentle and soft texture, which reduces friction against your hair. This means no hair breakage, no kinks and no hair loss. They are completely harmless for your hair, unlike regular elastic hair ties, and seriously such a game changer. Once I tried these soft and gentle scrunchies I can’t even think about going back to regular hair ties.

6. Sleep on a silk pillowcase

Silk pillowcase helps prevent hair breakage and moisture loss. Compared to cotton, silk absorbs much less moisture from your hair and skin. It also causes less friction than cotton, resulting in less wrinkles on the face and less hair breakage. This will help keeping the hair smooth, shiny and wake up without any entanglement.

7. Wear loose hairstyles

Pulling your hair back too tight into a ponytail causes damage to the hair follicles. This can cause loss of hair from the root and even bald patches. Try to avoid wearing tight hairstyles – instead wear looser styles such as low ponytail, braided ponytail, fishtail ponytail, etc.

It’s also very important to wear a protective hairstyle during sleep (like ponytail) because this really helps protecting the hair from breakage and damage that comes from entanglements during the night.

8. Wash your hair brushes regularly

Cleaning your hair brushes is as important as cleaning your makeup tools! Broken hair, dead skin cells, oils, product residue, and dust mites can easily build up on your hairbrush which then can serve as a ground for all sorts of bacteria. This increases the risk of infection which in turn can cause a dry and itchy scalp, as well as make your hair greasy quicker.

Wash your hair brushes at least every two weeks or more following these steps:

  1. First, use a hair brush cleaning tool like this one to remove the hair from your hairbrush.
  2. Then clean thoroughly the brush using shampoo and a toothbrush.
  3. Then put the brush in a bowl with water (or sink) and add some vinegar. Let it stay for 10 min and rinse thoroughly.

Never start brushing your hair top down. Start from the ends and work your way up. This way you’ll prevent damage while detangling your hair.

Vitamins are essential for healthy hair growth and may help in preventing hair shedding and thinning. The best vitamins for hair growth include B vitamins, vitamin D, vitamin E, zinc, biotin and iron. (2)

B vitamins: leafy greens, legumes, eggs, milk, yogurt;

Vitamin D: egg yolks, vitamin D fortified foods (orange juice, cereals, soy milk, etc.);

Zinc: legumes, seeds, nuts, dairy, eggs, whole grains;

Biotin: egg yolks, legumes, nuts and seeds, sweet potatoes, bananas, broccoli, avocados;

Vitamin E: Wheat Germ oil, sunflower seeds, almonds, hazelnuts;
